Warm Blatz for teenange runaways!

Teen Anal Terrorist's album "Warm blatz for teenage runaways" is available for download. My best description would be sort of a blend of early industrial experimentation and modern illbient/IDM. You can listen to some songs and find the download link at www.myspace.com/teenanalterrorist. The album's being distributed on a donation basis, so if you're completely destitute, don't worry. But, since we believe that people making a living doing what they love is a good thing, donations are encouraged. So if you find some form of enjoyment from the music, please give what you can. All songs are copyrighted under a license which allows other artists to use samples in their own work.

I’ve been following the Best Music on Campus contest and I’m really excited about the last 15 bands. There are some really good bands that represent all genres. I’d have to say Blue Sky Tomorrows is my favorite.

"A polished and multi-layered exploration of danceable beats, synthesized textures and industrial riffing, the album is rounded out with early Bowie-esque vocals and dark sensibilities. It's an absorbing venture into sonic territory that's as rich as it is modernistic."
SOME BY SEA

"...in the mould of alternative darlings such as Death Cab for Cutie and The Shins. Angular, indie-pop with layers of wonderful depth, Some By Sea also recall tunesmiths such as Fountains of Wayne, Marcy Playground and XTC. The carefully interwoven acoustic/ electric guitar layers, cello, vocal backing, and piano behind clever, Snow Patrol/ Reindeer Section-like lyrics more than tops Death Cab in appeal. Steering away from The Shins’ occasional smug artifice, Get Off The Ground has some outstanding songs with massive dramatic tension between angst-ridden verses and sweetly resolved choruses."
APPLESEED CAST
"Formed in 1997 in Los Angeles, Appleseed Cast released its first record, The End of The Ring Wars, a mere six months after forming. Looking for greener pastures, the band relocated to Lawrence, KS in 1998 and began endlessly touring in the United States and Europe for the next five years. Through the bands next five releases on Deep Elm, they underwent several line-up changes. After releasing the critically acclaimed Low Level Owl series, they began to capture the eyes and ears of new fans, especially Tiger Style Records. The quintet features Christopher Crisci (guitars, vocals), Aaron Pillar (guitar), Marc Young (bass), Josh Baruth (drums), and Jordan Geiger (keys). Citing influences as diverse as Creedence Clearwater Revival and The Sex Pistols, Appleseed Cast is ready for you to sit up and take notice."

MINUS STORY
"One of Lawrence's most distinctive voices is Minus Story, a five-piece fronted by the rawboned voice and frame of Jordan Geiger (also the former keyboardist for The Appleseed Cast). "No Rest for Ghosts" is the band's fourth full-length and second for the Bloomington-based Jagjaguwar label (also home to current tour-mates Okkervil River). Like most Jagjaguwar artists, Minus Story plays an adventurous brand of music that both endears them to loyal fans and precludes a quick rise to notoriety. That's not to say the band is inaccessible - they just require a bit of investment.
The album's foundation is a bunch of perfectly hummable folk songs peppered with existentialist lyrics."

THE RUM DIARY
"The California quartet weld together a hearty helping of of double percussion with deep swathes of melodious bass guitar, atmospheric guitars and keyboards, and gentle male vocals to create impressionistic indie rock of epic proportions. Like the groups to which they are most often compared - Mogwai, Godspeed You Black Emperor, Three Mile Pilot, Pinback, Tristeza, etc. - The Rum Diary excels at constructing mood music more than "proper" songs."

Hi there, folks !

I am working on a plan to promote indie-artists and bands in India - through various channels like direct marketing & club representation, etc. I am mostly looking at direct sales for CDs (min. 1000 pieces) through a well-knit network of music lovers, which I am in the process of developing. Basically I am open to any genre - which sounds good but is not commercial and yes, eclectic - becoz Indian music lovers are opening to new sounds. We'll rest market in Clubs & then sell to a captive database of music afficianados in major Indian metros. Anybody who has or knows someone with great music to share - and who wants to capture the big Indian market, pls reply to me with details. U can send me ur website, clips, bios etc on parvezagm23@yahoo.co.in

P.S: There are also offers for a few live gigs at select 5star hotels in the holiday (if u happen to be visiting India) season.

Looking to make a big musical bang with all u mates at Tribe !

Cheers

There is this unknown electropop band called The Opal Drops. They haven't put out an album yet, but have fans in the Netherlands, have been approached to play gigs in Los Angeles, and are in contact with some interesting major-label EBM artists. Their work has been recently played several times on WMUC FM Radio for The University of Maryland and they've spun in clubs in the Washington DC area. Outputmessage, on Ghostly and Echelon records currently has plans to remix some of their work. Check our their page, download their tracks from different locations, spread the tracks about.

"Kristen Hersh is something of a musical legend. Having formed her first band, the Throwing Muses, at the tender age of 19, she spent the best part of a decade traversing the American underground scene helping to forge, along with label mates The Pixies and The Breeders, the seminal sounds of '80s indie rock. In the years following the band's demise, five beautifully crafted acoustic albums were recorded in which the ghosts of Kristin's mental illness were exorcised with candid admission. In 50 Ft Wave the guitars are plugged back in but the intensity prevails. Despite each members' previous credentials, 50 Foot Wave are most definitely their own band. Sure, Throwing Muses hinted at the harder edge of alternative music, but this band are more thrashy, more up-tempo and, essentially, more electrifying."

"Joining the list of bands proving that girls can rock as hard (if not harder) than boys are Vervein, an indie rock quartet whose sound is simultaneously dreamy and hard-edged (think Azure Ray meets the Breeders). On their 2003 debut, Vast Low Cities (Angrymoose), the San Francisco band communicate a dark, confident sexiness. The resonating guitars and unabashed, smoky vocals are delicate yet brazen, like a beautiful, exotic flower that also happens to be carnivorous. Set to release a follow-up album this fall, Vervein are poised to give new meaning to (dare we say it?) girl power."

GIVEAWAY (LA) pre-ArthurFest party with Juan Maclean and Pole, 9/3

Saturday, September 3; 10 pm; 18+
THE JUAN MACLEAN (www.thejuanmaclean.com), POLE www.polylook.de/pole-music/content.html) @ Echo (1822 Sunset Blvd., Los Angeles, 90026)

Buy tickets: www.ticketweb.com/user/
Trivia Question: In a recent interview with the British press, Juan Maclean cites who as his biggest influence?

Email your answer with your first and last name to contest@spaceland.tv by noon on Friday, September 3. Enter “Juan Maclean giveaway #2” in the subject line. The eleventh person with the correct answer will win a pair of tickets to Friday’s show at the Echo. The twelfth person will win a copy of Juan Maclean’s latest single, “Tito’s Way.”

JUAN MACLEAN
The Juan Maclean's debut album Less Than Human may be the closest that DFA records will get to a mission statement without the unsightly clutter of words. All metallic clatter, moogy squeals and coke-nosed loops, it fuses disco decadence and record-collector erudition without taking sides: raw rhythms garlanded with machine noise.

POLE
An active remixer, label owner, musician, DJ, mastering engineer, promoter, studio owner and producer, all of Pole's outlets are governed by his urge to distil the substance of sounds and ideas, irrespective of any scenes. For Pole, it's the content which counts, rarely the environment it was generated in. This is mirrored by both the titles of his previous albums, which were kept deliberately simple (blue/1997, red/1999, yellow 2000) to avoid any distraction from their actual content, and his very personal selection of other projects.

Hear Juan Maclean and Pole here (www.myspace.com/arthurfest).

"Radio Vago was originally formed in Los Angeles as Radio Vagobond before changing its name. The band has released one EP and has been featured on compilations. In 2004 they parted ways with former singer Adrienne Pearson who was replaced by Mire Molnar. The band is currently recording its first full-length studio LP which is being produced by Omar Rodriguez of experimental rock band The Mars Volta."

"After two years on the LA scene, synth-pop rockers Radio Vago have become local darlings, recognized by LA Weekly readers as one of the city’s best new artists of 2002. Their five-song debut EP offers the rest of the world a taste of the atmospheric art rock churned up by these five punkish divas. Outfitted with everything from theremin melodies to buzzing guitar hooks, they ooze late-night menace in songs about spirits and screaming cities. Spiking the postured diffidence of post-punk new-wave classicists like Joy Division..."

"9 Red Sun is known for their soaring melodies, catchy hooks, clever lyrics, and energetic live show. Their music is a blend of pop, rock, new wave, and lilting harmonies. Think Blondie with Foo Fighters' guitars and The Beatles' harmonies. Lead singer Natalia Bortolotti is a combination of Chrissie Hynde's attitude, Debbie Harry's style, Sarah McLachlan's emotive range, and Alanis Morrissette's intensity.

9 Red Sun was formed in early 2004, by Natalia and guitarist, Steve Sicular. They shared a profound musical chemistry, which lead to prolific songwriting. With the addition of Kaitlin McGaw on keys and harmony vocals, Takeshi Hiraoka on bass, and Terry Thompson on drums, they developed their unique signature sound.

Songwriting is a major focus of 9 Red Sun, earning them awards from VH1 Song of the Year, John Lennon Song Contest and Billboard Song Contest, among many others. Their songs have also been featured in film and television, including One Tree Hill, Smallville, and The OC. (bio)

Scissors for Lefty/Hijack the Disco/The Weegs Wed @ 12 Galaxies

4 years in love, Scissors For Lefty has risen to be a source of underground & emotional fuel for California. They are a tightrope boxing act of modest intentions vs. naughty-naughty lifestyle, Scissors for Lefty... music, band, San Francisco, indie, pop.
www.scissorsforlefty.com

Hijack The Disco traverses the sonic spectrum. The dynamic, democratic and cohesive three-piece triggers mixed feelings of tragedy and hopefulness, desperation and strength. Formed in 2000 by Michael Mahony (bass & keyboard) and David Tsui (guitar) in Vermont, the band released two full-length home recordings and recorded/produced their self-titled EP on their own label, The Restless Press.
www.hijackthedisco.com

"Veiled beneath their catchy synth-punk slivers lies an illuminating tapestry of fiendish fun. Nothing is more bizarre than interweaving fraught yelping with a low-fidelity sound screen, while setting it to an abruptly deranged dance beat. This record provokes images of being wide-eyed and hopped up on crank, desperately clutching at your face, and furiously teetering on a highwire in stilettos, as you maniacally laugh through gritted teeth.
"Dream rock never sounded quite so, well, dreamy. San Francisco's own Film School, initially the solo project of Krayg Burton, now fleshed out with alumni of acts like Azusa Plane and Technicolor, crafts lush, opulent pop music soaked in bliss, kitted out with a sprinkle of Flying Saucer Attack, a touch of Nick Drake, and a twinge of the Byrds."
"Boyskout, a blend of thumping rhythms, dungeony arrangements, seductive vocal callings, and full-throttle attitude belted out amidst layers of surprising melodies, BoySkout's songs range from tight dark pop ditties - rock n roll goes dancing - to synth-driven ballads and eerily compelling tales of self-expression."

"Since 2001 San Francisco's Madelia have evolved from their dreamy origins into an amalgam of angular dance rhythms, shoegaze and post-whatever that Filter Magazine has deemed 'Dark Sonic Fuck Rock." Madelia's latest release, 'Everyday Underneath,' has garnered praise from the likes of Aquarius Records, AOL Online and Skratch Magazine, who enthused, "[Madelia's music]beautifully furls and unfurls, retaining and releasing
latent energy that comes out in a very steamy, ethereal fashion." Madelia's influences range from the creative dynamics of CA 90s hardcore bands Clikatat Ikatowi, Antioch Arrow, etc. to the textural songwriting of groups like My Bloody Valentine and the post-punk danceability of Wire & Gang of Four."

"Iceland's sprawling horizon has become an oddly ubiquitous touchstone for describing contemporary American music, with loads of new bands snatching their spectral bits from Sigur Rós' massive arsenal of otherworldliness. Tristeza's Jimmy LaValle, who has been
recording spare, instrumental hymnals as The Album Leaf since late 1998, is the closest North American equivalent to the pale Nordic maestro, and his pockets are well-stuffed with the papers to prove it: After touring extensively with Sigur Rós (who frequently joined LaValle onstage), LaValle was shuttled-via-invite to Mosfellsbaer, Iceland to record at Sundlaugin, Sigur Rós' home studio, borrowing their string section, Amina, and collaborating with vocalist Jon Thor Birgisson and members of (fellow Icelandic howlers) Múm."

"While grounded in earlier classic Floyd (what trippy noise-rock act isn't?), the Rum Diary leans towards the harsher, heavier sounds of Suntan, Mogwai and, at times, My Bloody Valentine. But don't let these feedback-coated touchstones fool you into believing RD is merely derivative. Something smart and a little sinister is going on here."

"The Roots of Orchis make instrumental headphone music for public transportation, because their introverted groove seems to slow everything else down. So when you just missed the bus or the trains are full and rush hour strangers are huddled against you claustrophobically, you can lose yourself in your head with their measured, somewhat dub-like beats, guitar, bass, samples, synthesizers, and occasional turntable scratching. The Roots of Orchis’ music is a really calm bath of subtlety, especially welcome during the throngs of a city’s chaos."

"Many consider the Pixies the Platonic ideal of a certain hardcore- pop style, of which copious transitory doppelgangers are merely cast shadows. But for every gross of mediocre Pixies imitators, there's a band that builds upon their legacy by appending their own specific
sensibility to it. It's prudent to note that these echoes are not usually the result of blatant imitation; rather, they're born from a genuine love and admiration for a work that inflamed the imaginations of so many people.

All art is some permutation of, or comment upon, the art its creator has internalized; what's crucial is that something is added to the mix. Without the Pixies' ascendancy, we wouldn't have the Nirvana we know. The same goes for Mclusky, who impressed their own distinct thumbprint and range of other influences on the Pixies' style. And
we probably wouldn't have Pidgeon's excellent marriage of boy/girl singing, shredded screaming, indie-pop, and blistering thrashcore-- the mansion they've built upon the foundation the Pixies laid by assimilating their own influences into a unique style."
Garfunkel when we hear such impeccable guitar work and such longing, tender lyrics. Pretty much as lush as the singer-songwriter thing gets. A rarity at the local level, even in a talent-rich city like San Francisco."

It's frustrated and sad, frenzied and barely collected. Their latest three-song EP, "Still Life with Vodka" (DIY Or Else), sees the coed five-piece channeling Thom York's bipolar energy and transitioning beautifully between explosive, hyperactive highs and heavy-lidded Ridalin lows."
"If some CBGB's Frankenstein had managed, circa 1977, to transplant Patti Smith's sensibility into Blondie's garage-band pop, the result would have sounded something like BoySkout's "School of Etiquette." Outfitted in such New Wavey accessories as sneakers and skinny ties, this lesbian-rock quartet revives such Smithian motifs as drowning and the erotic appeal of outlaws, but with girl-group bounce. (...) "School of Etiquette" may not be genteel, but it is impeccably arranged."

"They were raw, energetic, and their performance was
rife with fun, hilarious moments. Bluntly speaking, this was primarily the work of vocalist/bassist Steven Chamberlain who really makes this band –and this isn ’t because he was in TORCHES TO ROME. His brash, angry vocal style and stage presence are simply amazing, and every time the music reaches its ferocious peak I am reminded of him shouting “I ’m not afraid to say I care ” on that seminal TORCHES TO ROME 12 ”. At some point though, I always have to yell at myself “Pull your mind out of the past! ”All right, I give in. Musically speaking, the YELLOW PRESS are most certainly in that certain post-punk realm where the object is to get the audience to shake their asses and clap their hands above all else. A heavy FUGAZI influence (I remember thinking to myself how badly one of the guitar players wanted to be Guy Picciotto), lots of keyboards, and a general “sassyness ”about the band the YELLOW PRESS much closer to an en-vogue band like LIARS than, say SWIZ. But this isn ’t entirely a bad thing. The YELLOW PRESS put a measure of originality and urgency into the mix that is rarely found in this presently oversaturated genre. This specific 12 ”has a few really, really good songs, and overall ….it rocks, though still not nearly as explosively as their live performance."

The San Francisco music scene rules right now as SF's very own Condor continues to stretch this musical universe in strange new directions by bringing electric noise to its knees."

Using the same basic formula as Death Cab & DNTEL in the forming of The Postal Service, The Go Find combines indie artist with IDM artist. The Go Find (on Morr Music) combines the guitar and vocals of indie rocker Dieter Sermeus with the mellow sputtering IDM breaks of Styrofoam. The 2 most charming tracks from the 10 track full length, Miami, are remixed on a 4 track CDS entitled Over The Edge vs What I Want. Although, The Go Find are being compared to The Postal Service, I find that they fall more in line with The Notwist’s Neon Golden and Different Cars & Trains remixes.

Any other Naomi fans?

Anyone else here into Naomi? Their recent release "Pappelallee" has been getting a lot of play in my iTunes lately. I believe they are from Berlin, although their lable (Mole Listening Pearls) is French. It's sort of suave synth-pop, but with emphasis on the suave, and not as retro-sounding as you might expect. It has some fresh sounds in there. "October" is the standout track for me, although "King Kong Is Not Dead" seems to be getting marketed as the single.

I think it was just something I stumbled across online, based on somebody bought it who bought something else that I also bought (yeah, one of those) but it's turned into a real favorite.

So since some of us might be Artists or Producers here, I figured I'd share another social networking site that seems to be more for us creative folk. It's kind of like Tribe, Orkut, or Friendster but specificaly for Musicians, Artists, Djs, Models, and Acting I believe. It's free to sign up and You get about 100mb of space to upload your Demo material (either Music, Video, Art etc) and you can create your own profile and get your work out to people that are in the industry you want to be in.... if you sign up, add me to your friends network... :)

breathtaking! seriously, it's amazing. think DNTEL, but more intense. great vocals, beautiful glitchy textures. huge sweeping string lines. I can't stop listening to it.

ms. john soda ... other electro-pop artists

i saw ms. john soda last week in Philly as part of the Morr Music Tour, and they were really great. The band has members of the Notwist and Lali Puna. If this show is coming to your town, I highly recommend it, B. Fleishmann was pretty awesome too, even though watching someone twiddle knobs can be rather boring his sounds were good.

Not that names/labels are important, but is there a name for music which is part live-band and part electronic? I used to be really into exclusively electronic artists but now, I think I prefer when a group can successfully mix live instruments with cool or interesting electronics, like goldfrapp, or ms. john soda, or bjork.

Also, if anyone has other suggestions for music that we should check out, that might be neat.

there is a Philly band called Eltro who are finishing their latest album... I would suggest a listen to their stuff.
